FILM: Land And Freedom

Cinema City

25th March 5pm

Italy 1995, 109 mins
Director: Ken Loach
Starring: Ian Hart, Rosana Pastor

Ken Loach’s ambitious film follows a Liverpudlian to the Republican trenches of the Spanish Civil War and to the political treachery of the conflict.

Jim Allen’s script bears more than passing resemblance to George Orwell’s Homage to Catalonia. However, Allen’s hero is one who acts on instinct and gut feelings rather than political intelligence.

In 1936, after attending a workers’ meeting, the young communist Dave Carr decides to go to Spain to fight fascism. On a train bound for Barcelona he is recruited into the Republican militia. By May 1937 the Republicans in Barcelona, whilst ostensibly fighting Franco, find themselves a divided force – the militia and the anarchists on one side and the communists on the other. Featuring superb performances and memorable cinematography, the film has the viewer thoroughly involved in the characters’ stories.
