Missy Malone & Friends at The Playhouse

At the weekend the fabulous burlesque revue show Missy Malone & Friends finally came to Norwich and we just had to head down to the Playhouse to check it out.

Hosted by the fabulous Des O’Connor, in a natty white suit and with banjo in hand, the show was a feast of some of the best of British Burlesque.

With a stage showered in glitter and feathers we were treated to a traditional fan dance, balloon pops and even fire eating in a 90 minute show that passed in what felt like moments.

Audience participation was encouraged, and we loved watching unsuspecting audience members dragged up on stage and involved in acrobatics with the ever hilarious Miss Peggy-Sued. Other performances were from Scarlett Daggers, Gwendoline Lamour, Mille Dollar and our host Missy Malone herself.

As if there wasn’t enough glamour up on stage for the evening, the audience pulled out all the stops with their outfits and prizes were even awarded for the best dressed. We’d have put in more effort if we’d known, but when you’re up against a woman in a corset and a tutu there’s probably little hope for prizes.

If you missed Missy Malone and Friends this time then we recommend keeping an eye on their website for upcoming dates nearby as it’s a fabulous evening of glamour and glitter!

Matt has also made appearances on BBC, CBBC, Channel 4, Sky and ITV.

Pixie Le Knot is one of the most flexible contortionists in the UK. In her breathtaking performance she will perform the most extreme and amazing backbends which very few other british contortionists are able to achieve. She will be appearing in Paramount Insurge‘s new horror movie ‘The Devil Inside‘ which will be released January 6th 2012 in the USA and March 2nd 2012 in the UK. You may also have seen her in ‘The World’s Greatest Bodyshockers‘ on E4 last December.

Mentalism, Mind Magic or Psychological Illusions, call it what you will, Alex McAleer reads minds. Out and about – The September No Strings Burlesque and cabaret club

With an impressive line up of acts this evening had rather a lot to live up to……..and gosh it certainly did.  It was a real brace yourself (or corset up) kind of evening.  The No Strings events have now become so popular that as usual this show was a full house.

With an optional dress code of  ‘clown chic and carnie scum’ the Puppet Theatre became an eclectic mix of modern dress, burlesque gals, bearded ladies and clowns, just to name a few styles of attire being paraded round the room and mingling with the entertainers.

With doors opening at 7pm and the show starting at 8pm, it was fabulous to be able to have some pre show drinks and hear the noise levels start to grow as people started to relax and get in the mood for a good night out.

The drink prices were very reasonable indeed and at £3.20 for a large glass of wine (a can of coke was 70p) it felt great to have an evening out that didn’t break the bank. It was also possible to pre-order a drink for the interval, and true to their word it was ready and waiting as promised.

Before the show started we were treated to some great tunes from DJ Jazzlord, which  superbly added to the atmosphere.

The first act was The Hot Boppin Girls. One in a shell suit and one in what I believe to be velour sports wear…… I kid you not. A hilarious performance followed that saw them lose the track suits whilst dancing to rap music. Unique to say the least.

Another act – Ophelia Bitz entertained us with songs and general wit which had the house roaring with laughter, there were also a few shocked gasps heard! It was super that Ophelia returned in act two and treated us to a song that included the line ”Please don’t go topless mother!”

We also got some fire eating action and the final act involved an angle grinder being used on a pair of metal knickers……………

The night was wrapped up with more tunes from DJ Jazzlord, dancing and important conversations which involved comparing  facial hair. Some of it real…..and some of it not…………..

All in all a fun night. Burlesque, comedy, glamour and felt mustaches. What’s not to enjoy? Keep an eye on our events page  for the next extravaganza.
